While it's cooling down for some, it's heating up with swimwear brand Ayra Swim by Genesis Vegas. Based in California, AYRA Swim is made in the U.S. with local production in Los Angeles by Genesis Vegas. We caught up with founder and creative director Genesis Vegas to talk style, swimwear and the sweet life.
How did you become involved in fashion design? I love fashion and clothing since I was a child, I have always found myself modifying my clothes or trying to find special pieces that are unique. For that reason, I have always dreamed of wearing clothes I designed myself. Growing up I knew I would become an entrepreneur one day, and I decided to start working when I was very young and get the experience I needed in business. Almost three years ago, I felt ready to start my own company and create not only one brand but several labels where I can share my passion for design and my art. Swimwear is my first step as a designer, and I am already working on expanding our line with some RTW, a fashion blog, and a jewelry line.
What materials do you most like to work with? I can't deny my passion for handmade crochet & macrame since there's a lot of that in our collection. One of my favorite things to do is meet up with local artisans in DTLA and work on new designs for our line. We use recycled fabrics, and most of our pieces are sustainable techno-fabric made with Econyl® — 100% regenerated polyamide fiber from post-consumer materials, the touch is very soft and buttery, and our customers are always pleased with it. I am working with some new ribbed materials for our new collection, and they are also becoming one of my favorites.
How does your geography influence your aesthetic? Living in L.A. has, of course, influenced the brand to have a bit of a California girl vibe and here everyone loves our cuts that are Brazilian inspired. It's a mix of so many things, and also my origins as I grew up in Latin America, and spent most of my weekends going to some fabulous beaches where some people can only visit while on holiday.
Travel and photography are among my favorite things to do. I’ve been to over 25 countries taking photos and enjoying the food and the people, in all of those countries I’ve found particular things that belong to their culture that fascinate me and have inspired me to create some of my unique pieces like The Panama one piece.
What's been your greatest professional achievement to date? Creating AYRA, I used to dream of it, and now I live my dream, every day is a new adventure and the knowledge and growth it has brought to my life is something beyond words.
The acceptance and the popularity of our line in social media has been something that is one of our greatest achievements as a brand, today social media can either elevate or destroy your brand, and we have found a great recipe to succeed there.
What's one thing people would never guess about you? I would love to become a motivational speaker one day!
