Founded in 2015, Ivanka Hristova launched her eponymous brand following the success of her graduate collection. Born in Bulgaria, based in London, her passion for textile and print development and hand embroidered textile techniques make her one-to-watch.
How did you become involved in fashion design? I initially started Fashion Design and Textiles in secondary school, which lead through all the way to University. However, by the time I reached my final year, at the University of East London, not realizing the hard work it requires, I was more enticed by the artistic side of fashion, for example the process of creating a product, at this stage, I am definitely a lot more business orientated/conscious.
What materials do you most like to work with? I am aiming to establish my brand as being recognizably ethical and creatively outstanding.
How does your geographical location influence your aesthetic? Originally, I was born in Bulgaria, then moved to London at the age of ten. Native Bulgarian festival costumes were the inspiration for my Graduate Collection that happened to be unexpectedly successful and stood as the flipping point of my career.
What’s been your greatest professional achievement to date? Having my own business at the age of twenty-five is really what keeps me going for the amount of attention, self-focus and dedication I must put in every single minute of the day. Being able to be in control of your creative process and showcase, is incredible.
What’s one thing people would never guess about you? People never guess that as well as designing my silhouettes and shapes, I also design all of the prints, which go on the final outfits. I enjoy experimenting with color and print, and prefer finding that perfect "clique" by myself, rather than depend on existing fabrications.
