DESIGNER TALK: MARP

Definitely one-to-watch, we catch up with fashion designer Maria Pshenichnikova of Marp Collections.

How did you become involved in fashion design? My mother is an architect, but she drew great fashion sketches for herself. I was always inspired by her art. I graduated the school of sewing and cutting when I was 18 years old. But I went to Architectural Institute, because it has a very strong base. After graduation, I realized that I wanted to be a fashion designer. I went to a POLIMODA in Florence and graduated in 2014. I returned to Russia and founded my brand MARP. The name derives from my first and last name and my education history: I studied at MARHI (Moscow Architectural Institute) (graduated in 2012 ) and at Polimoda (graduated in 2014).

What materials do you most like to work with? I prefer to work with natural fabrics: cotton, silk, wool, jacquard.

How does your geographical location influence your aesthetic? Today, we are based in Moscow.
I cannot say that there is a Russian influence on my work. I was very much influenced by Florence.
My soul is always in Florence. I love the landscape and nature in Italy. But so far, I am based in Russia, but anything can change.

What’s been your greatest professional achievement to date? My greatest professional achievement to date was my own performance in 2015, from concept to creation. I was able to realize my idea "in the red " and bring it to the viewer.

What’s one thing people would never guess about you? I'm very sensitive. I can understand on the first days that a woman is waiting for a child.
