Tramp in Disguise | Heaven Has Heels

Welcome to Tramp in Disguise; print-tastic women's wear created and designed by Finnish-born, U.K. based designer Sini Moilanen.

How did you become involved in fashion design? From a young age, I have always been very creative and interested in fashion. Growing up in Finland, I loved to go to the local flea markets, buy vintage clothing and customize it to create my own unique style. After Finland, I joined the European Union, it was easy to start studying in another EU country and so I decided to move to U.K. to start my studies in design in 2000.

After receiving my BA (hons) in Fashion Textiles Design, I continued to study MA in Fashion Knitwear at the Royal College of Art. After my graduation I worked as a freelance designer in both fashion and textiles design and in 2010, I launched Tramp In Disguise womenswear label at London Fashion Week with Vauxhall Fashion Scout.

What materials do you most like to work with? As a textile designer the materials play a very big part in my design work. Tramp In Disguise specializes in printed garments of our own design—  using high quality fabrics. I like to print on and mix different types and weights of fabrics to suit the designs. Also I like to follow the theme of the collection with the materials I use and I like to play with different textures and color to achieve the most striking outcome.

How does your geography influence your aesthetic? I grew up in Finland and from childhood I have been surrounded by Scandinavian design but I don’t think the Scandinavian minimalism has really influenced my aesthetic. Instead, I think the nature that I experienced in my years in Finland has influenced the themes of my prints. Being a Londoner now for many years, I think living in a city surrounded by many different cultures and different kind of people has influenced me greatly. I like to design nature inspired garments for an urban audience.

What's been your greatest professional achievement to date? My greatest achievement to date has to be that I have been able to develop my distinctive design style over the years throughout our collections. Also we have acquired loyal customer base including some celebrities.

What's one thing people would never guess about you? My first and second name Sini Talvikki means Sky Blue Snowdrop in Finnish language.
