This season Rita Carvalho presented her capsule collection as part of MODALisboa's Sangue Novo (young designer) program. Originally from Lisbon, Carvalho graduated in Fashion and Textile Design at ESART- Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas in Castelo Branco, later moving to London where she interned at Eudon Choi´s Studio. Interning with well-known Portuguese designer Alexandra Moura, Carvalho has stepped out on her own with her "NOPE!" Autumn/Winter 2017 collection.

"This collection represents the outside materials and the way they stuck us as well as the desperate search for comfort," says the designer. "Suffocation, discomfort, tension. NOPE! To say no, the need for space, the feeling of getting stuck on ourselves. The external materials and the discomfort they cause are represented by manipulations and elements that create plasticity. The oversized silhouette that suddenly tightens creates dynamic between needing space and feeling stuck."

Carvalho interpreted this through street-wear inspired looks with contrasting textures and fabrics—sea green velvet overalls juxtaposed with plastic see-through outerwear. Oversized silhouettes with distinctly feminine attributes made for a ready-to-wear collection that would not be out of place on the streets of Manhattan. — ANGELA GILLTRAP
