If you love inspired design then get to the movies stat. Oscar winning costume designer Colleen Atwood absolutely kills it in The Huntsman: Winter's War.
The premise: Freya (Emily Blunt) seeks solice from a broken heart—and an evil sister Ravenna (Charlize Theron)—retreating to a northern kingdom to raise an army of huntsmen as her protectors. Gifted with the ability to freeze her enemies in ice, Freya teaches her young soldiers to never fall in love. When Eric (Chris Hemsworth) and fellow warrior Sara defy this rule, the angry queen does whatever she can to stop them.
The designs: Atwood was enlisted with the task of dressing not one, but two evil witches—as well as an army of battle-worn fighters. And my goodness, we have never wanted to be a wicked witch more in our lives!
Atwood dresses Freya in silver, Ravenna in gold to symbolize not only their status but the source of their "powers." One of the biggest challenges—Atwood says in an interview with TooFab.com—was giving the sisters a sense of having the same roots but growing in different directions. The "icy" exterior and embellished designs of Freya the Ice Queen's outfits (Emily Blunt) were truly breathtaking, the movement of the garments, inspired and a testament to this incredible designer's skills.
The movie itself has been panned by critics but quite frankly, I loved it—but then again I also love Tropic Thunder so, bear that in mind. I thought both Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron did an amazing job as did Sara (Jessica Chastain). If you love Game of Thrones and Vikings, you'll love this. Chris Hemsworth being his charming self doesn't hurt either. — ANGELA GILLTRAP
