It’s 9pm as a battle-weary crowd enter the Pavillion at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York. For many journalists, this show marks the final in a twelve-hour daily grind of Spring/Summer collections. And yet, there is a palpable energy in the room because this is Venexiana.

Each season, designer Katy Stern delivers a collection of over forty looks—almost double that of her fellow designers—on some of the industry’s most glamorous models. A professional architect, pianist and fashion designer, Stern is known for delivering occasion wear with a rock’n’roll edge. Born and educated in Europe, her signature aesthetic of exquisite fabrics and expert tailoring have drawn a global crowd that are in search of statement pieces destined for the well-to-do.

Inside the fashion week venue, the catwalk has been configured so that everyone has a front row seat, to view designs top-to-toe—taking in the exquisite attention to detail and witty embellishments. On one side of me, an editor from Vogue Thailand, the other, a stylist from Spain. Backstage, the veteran designer is cool, calm and collected as the models dress in their first looks. Immediately recognizable for her platinum bob and kohl-rimmed eyes, journalists wait in line to interview the designer in regards to the inspirations behind her latest collection. But it’s the legacy that interests me. Steadfastly sticking with evening and cocktail wear has been the key to her ongoing success. For Stern, it’s both a privilege and a joy.

“My dresses are for those special occasions in life,” she explains, above the constant hum of show preparations. “It’s such a privileged to be able to provide an outfit that becomes a part of someone’s history.”

From Russia to New York, Korea to Dubai, if it calls for glamor, you can bet a Venexiana design will be involved. These are more than simply sequins and satin; these pieces are destined to become a treasured part of someone’s past, present and future. VenexianaLtd.com — ANGELA GILLTRAP
